About Celery

Celery is a fibrous plant that belongs to the same family of carrot i.e Apiaceae. It can be eaten raw or cooked. 

It is rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

In recent times, celery juice grabbed attention as a low-calorie snack and a ‘superfood’, both online and offline.

In fact, New York Times best-selling author Anthony William started a #CeleryJuiceChallenge on Instagram. He challenged people to drink celery juice daily for one week.

1. Relieves Constipation And Digestive Disorders

Celery juice improves the digestive system. The fiber present in the celery keeps the digestive process moving. 

Eating dietary fiber eases digestion and helps in free bowel movements, thereby preventing irritable bowel syndrome(An intestinal disorder causing pain in the stomach, wind, diarrhea, and constipation (Source).

Also, eating high fiber food reduces the risk of colon cancer.


2. Possesses Anti-Inflammatory Properties

A study conducted in 2013, investigated whether celery seed extract has Antihypertensives properties or not. 

In that study, thirty participants with high blood pressure, consumed 75-milligram capsule of celery seed extract, two times a day for 6 weeks. 

Results, significantly lower blood pressure in participants.

Another study found that celery leaf extract reduces cholesterol, triglyceride, blood pressure in animals with high blood pressure, or hypertension. (Source)

7. Reduces Cholesterol Levels

A study investigated whether feeding celery leaf extract has any effect on cholesterol levels of rats fed a high-fat diet.

In that study, rats that consumed celery leaf extract showed a significant decrease in the bad cholesterol level or low-density lipoprotein (LDL), compared to those that did not receive the extract.

In another study (also conducted on animals), found that antioxidants present in celery may be responsible for reducing cholesterol levels by preventing the cholesterol stores from breaking and entering the bloodstream.

In 1 medium (40 g) celery stalk, there are 30 milligrams (mg) of sodium present.

So, you should be careful about consuming the amount of celery. As a high sodium diet can cause high blood pressure and fluid retention, both of them can lead to health problems. 

However, eating limited celery each day does not cause problems generally. 

May Harm The Kidneys

Foods like celery, beet, spinach, etc. are high in dietary oxalates. These dietary oxalates when reacted with calcium ions in your body form calcium oxalate deposits a.k.a stones. 

In other words: high celery consumption can cause kidney stones or Calcification in the kidneys.

Bottom Line

Researches, studies have shown many positive sides of celery. From reducing blood pressure to balancing blood sugar, it is a healthy juice. Still, some studies are still in progress to get more details and information about celery.

As of now, moderate consumption of celery is healthy and will not lead to health issues. 

In fact, people have seen positive effects on their bodies.
